From Gross Salary to Net Pay in Italy

Italian gross salary is not the amount paid to the employee. The payslip normally deducts employee social security contributions and income tax. National IRPEF is progressive, while regional and municipal surtaxes depend on the employee's tax residence and local rules.

This tool separates each component so foreign employers, HR teams and employees can understand why gross annual salary, taxable income and take-home pay are different figures.

Calculation method

How the 2026 Italy Payroll Tax Estimate Works

1. Employee social security

The editable employee INPS rate is applied to gross salary. If selected, the calculator adds 1% to the portion exceeding the 2026 threshold of €56,224.

2. National IRPEF

The employee contribution is deducted from gross salary to estimate the IRPEF taxable base. The calculator then applies the 2026 national rates of 23%, 33% and 43% by bracket.

3. Deductions and relief

Ordinary employment deductions are estimated according to taxable income and employment days. When selected, the structural employee tax relief is also included under the single-income assumption.

4. Local surtaxes

Regional and municipal surtaxes are calculated using the effective rates entered by the user. Local progressive rates, exemptions and settlement timing can differ.

5. Annual net salary

Estimated net salary equals gross salary minus employee INPS, net national IRPEF and local surtaxes, plus any applicable low-income payroll relief.

6. Monthly presentation

The annual result is divided by 12 and by the selected 12, 13 or 14 salary instalments. These are averages, not a monthly payroll calendar.
